Teeth whitening: Refresh your smile!

Teeth whitening: Refresh your smile!

Written by Dr. Lejla Mirović, Dentist

Teeth whitening is a popular dental procedure aimed at improving the appearance of teeth by reducing discoloration and stains. But why whiten teeth?

Over time, factors such as consuming colored foods and drinks, using tobacco, poor oral hygiene, and natural aging can lead to tooth discoloration or yellowing. Teeth whitening procedures offer an effective solution to counteract these effects, resulting in a brighter and more attractive smile.

Professional treatment or at-home variant?

There are several available methods for teeth whitening, from professional treatments performed by dentists to over-the-counter products that individuals can use at home.

Before teeth whitening, an examination is mandatory to determine if there is any decay or gum disease that needs to be addressed before the treatment, as well as removal of tartar and soft plaque.

Treatments in dental offices often involve stronger whitening agents and specialized equipment, which can provide faster and more dramatic results compared to home methods. Dentists can tailor the treatment to the individual's specific needs and monitor their progress, ensuring safety and effectiveness.

Office teeth whitening involves activating a highly concentrated gel (35%) with a helium lamp or laser, which accelerates its effect, and the first results are expected within 15 – 30 minutes. If the patient is still not satisfied with the obtained color, the procedure is repeated in the same duration and in the same way.

The home teeth whitening method usually involves the use of toothpaste, strips, gels, and whitening foils based on an impression taken in the office. These products contain milder whitening agents and can be used over a longer period, gradually lightening the shade of the teeth. However, it's important to carefully follow instructions and not exceed the recommended use, as improper application can lead to tooth sensitivity or gum irritation.

The effectiveness of whitening treatments can vary depending on the severity of the discoloration and the chosen method. In addition, teeth whitening is not a permanent solution, and results may fade over time, especially if poor habits causing tooth discoloration are not addressed.

The Importance of Consulting with a Dentist

Consulting with a dentist before undergoing any whitening procedure is crucial to determine the most appropriate method for achieving the desired results, with the priority being the health and safety of the teeth.
